At The Green Wave Invitational

As is usually the case this time of year, I haven’t been able to hang out at the club as much as I’d like to.  Much of my time has been spent on the hardwood of a basketball court or on the vinyl and foam of a wrestling mat.  So there’s no conversation here tonight, just some of the images I saw through my camera lens during the 2013 Matt Tice Memorial Green Wave Invitational at Leeds High School.

JC Wyatt of Homewood and Dillon Campbell of Vestavia Hills were contenders in the 152-pound weight class.

Campbell's pin helped Vestavia claim the top spot in the 11-team tournament.

Leeds' Dylan Cook celebrates after winning a heavyweight match that helped boost the host Green Wave to a third-place team finish.

Jared Melby of Homewood appears to have the upper hand over Moody's Maricio Mendozza in a 113-pound match, but that didn't last long. Mendozza eventually finished fourth in the weight class.

Chandler Teems of Leeds and Vestavia's Douglas Burke were paired in the semifinal of the 126-pound weight class.

Teems prepares to toss Burke to the mat but ultimately lost the match. It wasn't a bad tournament for either wrestler, as Burke went on to finish second in the weight class, and Teems ended up in fourth place.

The semifinal of the 152-pound weight class paired Vestavia's Morgan Long against Michael Waller of Chelsea.

Waller took the match by decision.

Springville's Alex Jackson loses his headgear late in his 138-pound match against Coleman Reeves of Oak Mountain. Reeves was the winner by a 7-6 decision.

Wrestling is an intense, physical sport, as is evident by the expression on Drake Schofield's face as the Leeds athlete grapples with Blake Galloway of Springville during a 152-pound match.

Although Schofield made him work for it, Galloway won the match on his way to a fourth place tournament finish. Cheering him on in the background are Springville coaches Keith Maple and Brian VanDevander.
